Amazed Lerato sighed as she hung another bauble on a branch of her family’s Christmas tree. She would have loved to have had a real tree, one that smelt of fresh pine and was covered in lush green needles, but because her mom had been too busy at work to go tree shopping, they were stuck with their old, artificial one.

‘I hate Christmas,’ Lerato said. ‘And I hate these baubles!’ she added angrily, hurling one across the room.

Things hadn’t always been this way though. December used to [...]

HISTORY
Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean. It is a part of a chain of West Indian islands known as the Greater Antilles. The Spanish governed Jamaica in the 1600s and brought in slaves from Africa, which is why 90% of the Jamaican population is of African descent.

In 1655, Spain lost the island to the British. Slavery continued however, and by the late 1700s Jamaica was one of the largest slave markets in the world. Though slavery was abolished in 1868, it was not until 1962 that Jamaica was declared independent. To this day it remains a member of the British Commonwealth.

Omnivores help themselves to the best of both worlds.
Omnivores are animals that eat both plants and meat. Humans are considered omnivores because we include fruit, veggies, grains and animal products in our diets.

Dinosaurs
Omnivorous dinosaurs included the ornithomimus and the oviraptor. They ate eggs, insects and plants. In fact, many dinosaurs classified as herbivores were accidental omnivores. This is because, while munching on plants, they would often unwittingly also ingest insects and small animals.

Baboons
These large monkeys live in troops and can become quite violent when threatened. They eat snakes, lizards, insects and small animals, but also enjoy grass and roots. Baboons can weigh between 14 and 45 kg, and are normally grey to brown with hairless faces.

You’ll have to get your microscope out to see these tiny animals.

Protozoa are single-cell organisms that can be found in freshwater ponds and rivers, the sea or in moist soil. They are divided into four groups, namely amoeba, ciliates, flagellates and sporozoa.

Fun fact
There are more protozoa in the world than any other animal.

Amoeba
During feeding, this type of protozoan extends its body until it has completely surrounded its food. It then secretes special enzymes that help to break the food into smaller particles before converting the food
particles into energy to move. This process of feeding is known as phagocytosis.

Did you know?
There is a dangerous amoeba called Entamoeba histolytica, transported through infected water supplies, that causes illness in [...]
