LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FOOD CHAIN.

What is it?

Every species on Earth needs energy to survive. The food chain is the process by which energy is transferred from one species to another.

How does it work?

The food chain is divided into two categories, namely producers and consumers.

Producers

Plants are examples of producers. A plant uses light from the sun, water and other natural elements to produce its own energy.

Consumers

Animals and humans are consumers because we eat plants and, often, other animals for energy. We do not produce our own energy. Humans are at the top of the food chain, as we use energy from plants, animals and other sources (such as minerals), so that we can live more comfortably.

A Good Oman

Find out about this little-known Middle Eastern country.

CAPITAL CITY: Muscat

FLAG: Oman’s national flag is made up of three horizontal stripes and one vertical stripe. The white symbolises peace and prosperity, the red stands for battles against foreign invaders and the green is for fertility.

The vertical stripe contains the national symbol of two swords crossed over a traditional curved dagger.

CURRENCY: The Omani Rial (OMR) is the national currency. One OMR is worth about R20.

GOVERNMENT: Oman is a monarchy. Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said has the ultimate authority, but the parlia-ment has some legislative powers and helps to oversee things.
