BY YVETTE THOMSON

It was a beautiful day in Jumbo Safari Park. The sun was shining, making the watering hole sparkle. The leaves on the baobabs rustled gently in the breeze that was cooling down the hot morning. The fresh smell of last night’s thunderstorm was still lingering in the air. Thank goodness for that! Game ranger Jack had been worried about this summer’s drought. Luckily, clouds in the shape of cauliflower had appeared over the park and everyone – especially those on four legs – had breathed a sigh of relief. To the human ear it was a quiet day, the only sounds to be heard those of chirping birds and rustling leaves. But to its animal residents, the park was a frantic hub of activity.

‘Coming through! Coming through!’ Elsie the elephant trumpeted. ‘The calves need a bath,’ she said to no one in particular.
Three zebra, Myrtle, Maggie and Marie, glared at Elsie. ‘Typical,’ Maggie snorted. ‘Just because she’s the biggest, she thinks she’s the most important.’ They stepped aside, allowing Elsie and her two calves to barge into the water. ‘I heard that!’ Elsie cried. ‘And yes, I do think an elephant is more important than a zebra.

I’ve seen the reactions of tourists on game drives. They’re definitely more excited to see me than they are to see you three.’ Elsie lifted her trunk triumphantly. ‘Zebra are so boring.’ Myrtle gasped. ‘How dare you!’ She swatted a fly away from her back with a swish of her tail. ‘Have you seen the size of your ears?’ she asked. ‘That’s why tourists stare at you!’

Gerald the giraffe let out a loud snort.
‘You’re one to talk!’ he guffawed. ‘You look like a horse with pyjamas on!’ Sibu and Stella, a pair of small monkeys, came swinging over from a nearby tree. ‘No wonder you never get invited to parties, Gerald,’ Sibu smirked. ‘You’re such a pain in the neck.’

He laughed so hard he almost fell of the rock. ‘Geddit? In the neck!’ Stella looked confused. ‘No,’ she replied. Sibu rolled his eyes. ‘Pain in the neck…’
he explained. ‘Because of Gerald’s long neck.’ All the animals started laughing. Although they were always teasing each other, they were really one big happy family. Elsie argued with Myrtle, Maggie and Marie, and Gerald always bickered with Sibu and Stella. But at the end of a long, hot day they liked nothing better than to gather around the watering hole and watch the African sunset together.

Everyone except Kyle, that is. Kyle the crocodile was the grumpiest resident of Jumbo Safari Park. He hardly ever talked to the other animals, never mind join in on the banter. When he did, he usually only snapped at them, almost frightening the stripes off the zebra. The rest of the animals tried to include Kyle in their conversation but his grumpiness was too much. ‘He’s just rude,’ Elsie said, using her trunk to scratch behind her big elephant ears.
Sibu nodded. ‘I’ve tried to make a few crocodile jokes but he just snarled at me.’ Gerald raised his eyebrows. ‘Maybe it was because your jokes are so bad,’ he said.

Later that day the animals all went their separate ways. Elsie fed her calves under the big baobab, Stella picked ticks off Sibu’s head and Gerald wandered off in search of sweet leaves to graze on. Kyle, as usual, was in the water by himself. ‘Hi Kyle!’ Beryl chirped. She was a small red bird with a white crest.
‘Leave me alone,’ Kyle snarled.

‘What’s wrong with you?’ Beryl asked, landing on top of Kyle’s head. ‘You are the grumpiest animal in the park!’ Kyle used his big tail to splash water all over Beryl. ‘Leave me alone,’ he said again, even grumpier this time. ‘I have a toothache.’ Annoyed, a wet Beryl flew into a tree. ‘Fine!’ she chirped. ‘But you’ll never make any friends being this grumpy.’ Kyle was in no mood to argue any further. He really did have a bad toothache. After a while he dozed off. He started snoring with his mouth wide open. Beryl watched him from the tree.

‘No wonder he has toothache,’ she chirped to herself. ‘Look at all those dirty teeth!’ Flying on to the sleeping crocodile, Beryl carefully hopped into his big mouth. Suddenly Kyle closed his mouth with a loud snap. Beryl was trapped. ‘Just what do you think you’re doing?’ Kyle demanded. ‘I told you to leave me alone!’

Beryl carefully positioned herself in one corner of Kyle’s mouth. ‘Please don’t eat me,’ she begged. ‘I promise to leave you alone.’ Kyle was quiet for a moment. ‘What have you been doing inside my mouth?’ he asked slowly. ‘Nothing!’ Beryl chirped. ‘I was only picking out bits of food between your teeth,’ she tried to explain. ‘I missed lunch and I was hungry.’

Kyle considered this. ‘I’ll let you out on one condition,’ he said. ‘Anything!’ Beryl chirped in relief. ‘You have to come back tomorrow and do it again.’ As he opened his jaw wide, an astonished Beryl flew out. ‘What?’ she asked. ‘Why?’ Kyle broke into a wide smile. ‘You’ve cured my toothache,’ he explained. ‘There must have been something stuck in between my teeth.’ Beryl didn’t look convinced. ‘Are you sure?’ she asked.

‘Positive!’ Kyle exclaimed. ‘Since you cleaned my teeth, the toothache is gone!’Unknown to them, Sibu and Stella were sitting in the next tree. Before anyone could say ‘wildfire’, the news of Kyle’s cured toothache had spread. No one in Jumbo Safari Park could believe the unlikely new friendship between Kyle and Beryl. Keeping her promise, Beryl came back the following day to clean Kyle’s teeth. The other animals watched in awe as Beryl hopped around inside Kyle’s mouth – without being eaten! Kyle was also in a much better mood. ‘You’re actually quite nice when you’re not grumpy,’ Sibu pointed out.

‘And you’re actually quite nice when you’re not making really bad jokes,’ Kyle grinned. ‘Hey, my jokes are funny!’ Sibu protested. ‘Now, do you want to join me for a game of snap?’ Sibu asked Kyle. ‘Apparently it’s your favourite…’

Thandiwe is a very picky eater, always pulling up her nose at everything. But there are a few changes coming her way. Find out what they are in the next issue of Kids SuperClub.

ECHINODERMS
These invertebrates have spiny skins, which is what the word ‘echinoderm’ actually means, and a hard exoskeleton. Look for these animals on the ocean floor – starfish and sea cucumbers are echinoderms.

DID YOU KNOW?
The oldest echino-derm (now a fossil) lived more than 560 million years ago.

MOLLUSCS
Snails, clams and squid are all molluscs. Most have a hard outer shell to protect their soft bodies, but some, like octopuses, have no outer shell. These clever animals are considered the most intelligent of all molluscs. They have the most developed eyes and can see in colour.

DID YOU KNOW?
There are 50 000 different types of molluscs in the world.

ARACHNIDS
This is a fascinating group of invertebrates. They have two sections to their bodies, eight legs and no wings or antennae. Spiders, scorpions and ticks are all part of the arachnid family. Almost all arachnids are carnivores and hunt for their food. But before they can feast they must turn their food into a liquid so they can suck it up. They do this by pouring digestive juices over or into their hapless victims.

CRUSTACEANS
Crabs, lobsters and barnacles all form part of this family. Like some molluscs, they have a hard outer shell and live in water. Unlike echinoderms, crustaceans live in the ocean and in fresh water. Crustaceans have antennae on their heads, which help them find food and move about without bumping into rocks and other obstacles. Their abdomens hold their hearts, digestive systems and reproductive systems!

DID YOU KNOW?
Some spiders live underwater all their lives.

DID YOU KNOW?
The largest crustacean is the giant spider crab, found in Japan. They can grow up to 40 cm wide!
